Dear fellow humans,
As tourists stuck in Peru, we would like to ask you for your attention for a few minutes.
The current Covid-19 crisis will bring tourism to its knees for a long time. People working in this field are now affected in two ways. We experienced firsthand how the situation in Peru suddenly changed. Machu Picchu was an important goal for most of the people who were staying at the Pariwana Hostel Cusco. But on March 16, a curfew was imposed that forced us to stay in the hostel and allowed us to leave it for grocery shopping or buying medication at the pharmacy once per day only.
A few days later, a guest who had been allowed to leave the hostel shortly after the issuance of the curfew tested positive for the virus. The hostel was immediately sealed off by the military and strict rules were established that were supposed to last for 1 to 3 months. Certainly a useful measure, but most of us were exposed to a lot of psychological stress, too.
14 persons who were working in the hostel at that time were exposed to triple burdens due to the fear of a dramatic drop of tourist numbers, the quarantine itself with its hard rules and the task of still providing best service to their guests for several weeks.
Despite the prospect of losing their job, and the inconsistent behaviour of the ministry of health, the team supported us with devotion and warm-heartedness non-stop, making sure that we feel very well according to circumstances. Besides the exhausting work by the highly decimated team, we were always proven by a smile that we were welcome and that no one would give up before the last guest would have left the hostel safely. After some employees had fallen sick as well, many guests offered their support as volunteers and assisted in the kitchen and helped the cleaning staff. A big team and, above all, deep friendships were the great output of this special time and situation.
The travellers were gradually able to return to their homeland. Only the Peruvians still remain in this lovely place that has grown dear to our hearts in so many ways.
But looking ahead, there's a lot of uncertainty for the Peruvians:
- What about the jobs?
- What about their living expenses?
- When will the situation calm down so that tourists can return to Peru?
We as „Quaranteam“ have established this project to provide financial support to the hostel's staff so that they can come through the upcoming months and hopefully pursue their job after the crisis.

als in Peru Gestrandete möchten wir euch einladen, uns ein paar Minuten eurer Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken.
Die derzeitige Covid-19-Krise wird den Tourismus für längere Zeit in die Knie zwingen. Menschen, die vom Tourismus leben, sind nun doppelt betroffen. Am eigenen Leib konnten wir miterleben, wie sich die Situation in Peru schlagartig verändert hat. Machu Picchu war das Ziel der meisten, die sich im Pariwana Hostel Cusco einquartiert hatten. Doch am 16. März wurde eine Ausgangssperre verhängt, die uns zwang, das Hostel nur noch für Einkäufe und den Gang zur Apotheke zu verlassen.
Wenige Tage später dann die Hiobsbotschaft: Ein Gast, der kurz nach dem Erlass der Ausgangssperre in sein Heimatland ausreisen konnte, wurde dort positiv auf das Virus getestet. Sofort wurde das Hostel durch das Militär abgeriegelt und strenge Regeln aufgestellt, welche nach erster Aussage 1 – 3 Monate Bestand haben sollten.
Eine sicherlich sinnvolle Maßnahme, wie sich einige Tage später durch weitere positive Testergebnisse an BewohnerInnen herausstellte, die für viele jedoch zu starker psychischer Belastung führte.
14 MitarbeiterInnen des Hostels, die sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt in selbigem befanden, waren der Dreifachbelastung durch die Angst des Einbruchs der Touristenzahlen, die Quarantäne selbst mit ihren harten Regeln und die Aufgabe, die Gäste zu versorgen, für mehrere Wochen ausgesetzt.
Trotz dem Ausblick, vielleicht ihren Job zu verlieren, und der wankelmütigen Verhaltensweise des Gesundheitsamts versorgten uns alle MitarbeiterInnen ohne einen Tag Pause mit Hingabe und Warmherzigkeit und sorgten so dafür, dass wir uns den Umständen entsprechend sehr gut aufgehoben fühlen konnten. Neben der durch das stark dezimierte Team sehr anstrengenden Arbeit wurde uns immer wieder durch ein Lächeln bewiesen, dass wir herzlich willkommen sind und dass niemand aufgeben würde, bevor der letzte Gast das Hostel sicher verlassen haben würde. Nachdem dann auch noch einige Mitarbeiter erkrankt waren, fanden sich viele Freiwillige und halfen beim Kochen und Putzen. Freundschaften und vor allem ein großes Team entstanden.
Nach und nach konnten die BewohnerInnen in ihre jeweilige Heimat zurückkehren. Einzig die PeruanerInnen verbleiben an dem Ort, der uns auf so viele Weisen ans Herz gewachsen ist.
Schauen wir in die Zukunft der PeruanerInnen, bleibt viel Unsicherheit:
- Was wird aus den Arbeitsplätzen?
- Was wird aus dem Hostel?
- Wann wird sich die Lage so weit beruhigt haben, dass wieder Gäste die alte Inka-Hauptstadt mit ihrer Anwesenheit beehren können?
Uns BewohnerInnen ist es zum Herzensprojekt geworden, die MitarbeiterInnen des Hostels finanziell zu unterstützen, damit diese die nächste Zeit überstehen und hoffentlich im Anschluss ihrer alten Beschäftigung nachgehen können.

Queridos colegas / amigos,
cuando estuvimos varados en Perú, nos gustaría invitarle a que nos preste unos minutos de su atención.
La crisis de Covid-19 paralizará el sector turístico durante mucho tiempo.
Las personas que trabajan en este segmento ahora se ven afectadas dos veces.
Pudimos ver por nosotros mismos cómo la situación en Perú cambió repentinamente.
Machu Picchu era un objetivo importante de la mayoría de las personas que se habían hospedado en el Hostal „Pariwana Cusco“.
A partir del 16 de marzo, se impuso el toque de queda, lo que nos obligó a quedarse en el hostal. Solo teníamos permiso para salir del hostal para comprar alimentos y medicinas una vez al día.
Unos días después, un huésped que pudo salir del hostal, dio positivo por el virus.
El hostal fue cerrado de inmediato por los militares y se elaboraron reglas estrictas que, según la primera declaración, debían seguirse durante uno a tres meses.
Sin duda, una medida útil, pero también fue un gran estrés psicológico para la mayoría de nosotros.
14 personas que trabajaban en el hostal en ese momento estuvieron expuestas a cargas triples debido al temor de una caída dramática en el número de turistas, la cuarentena en sí misma con sus estrictas reglas y la tarea de brindar el mejor servicio a sus huéspedes durante semanas.
A pesar de la posibilidad de perder su trabajo y el comportamiento engañoso de la oficina de salud, el Equipo del hostal nos apoyó con devoción y compromiso cálido sin un día de descanso, asegurándose de que nos sintamos muy bien a pesar de las circunstancias.
Además del arduo trabajo del equipo diezmado, siempre nos mostraban con una sonrisa que éramos bienvenidos y que nadie se rendiría antes de que el último huésped saliera del albergue de manera segura. Después de que algunos empleados se enfermaron, muchos huéspedes ofrecieron su apoyo como voluntarios y ayudaron en la cocina y en la limpieza. Un gran equipo y, sobre todo, amistades profundas fueron el gran resultado de este momento y situación especiales.
Los viajeros gradualmente pudieron regresar a su tierra natal. Solo los peruanos aún permanecen en este hermoso lugar que ha crecido hasta nuestros corazones de muchas maneras.
Sin embargo, cuando miramos el futuro de los peruanos, hay mucha incertidumbre:
- ¿Qué pasa con los trabajos?
- ¿Quién pagara los gastos de vida?
- ¿Cuándo se calmará la situación, que los turistas volverán a Perú?
Nosotros, como huéspedes de "Quaranteam", hemos establecido un proyecto de corazón para proporcionar apoyo financiero al personal del albergue para que puedan sobrevivir en el futuro cercano y, con suerte, dar seguimiento después de la crisis a su empleo.
