Hi Beautiful People,
I'm Ian. I am passionate about social justice and Latin America. What does that mean exactly? It is statement that I am still trying to understand for myself every day. For now, allow me to share with you an opportunity I was offered, which will allow me to live out this passion every day, and hopefully understand further what it means to be a person commited to social justice.
Beginning in October, I will be moving to Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua to work as the Volunteer Coordinator at the Jubilee House Community and Center for Development of Central America (JHC-CDCA). I will be living in community with individuals like me who have committed to live a life of simplicity, service, spirituality and community. I am honored to fill a roll that is integral to the mission of the CDCA. The CDCA’s goal is to work in partnership with communities and cooperatives to facilitate empowerment: enabling them to find their own solutions to the problems they identify and connecting them with resources to solve their problems.
My role is connected to the other goal of the CDCA, which is to educate and connect people from developed countries like the United States about Nicaraguas history and present. This is why the CDCA hosts delegations. My role will be to coordinate these delegations, accompany them during their stays, and volunteer in my spare time with the various projects of the CDCA. Eventually, I hope to assist in starting a "Men and Boys Group" that will accompany the "Women and Girls Group" that already exists in the clinic.
The reason I am reaching out to all of you is that the CDCA is a non-profit. All of the funds and donations go to the projects, and fund the full-time employees, all of whom are Nicaraguans representing their community and benefiting from the resources. With this in mind, the CDCA does not pay its foreign volunteers. For this, I am asking for your help. I know that many of you are in similar financial situations as myself, and I understand if you cannot make any contribution. If you feel compelled to support me in any way I would be grateful. Furthermore, I will include you in my monthly update that I will be writing every month that I am abroad. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and consider support.
