There's no place like home

To the most important people, I am "mommy" but others call me Erin. I am here as a mom and I am appealing to you as the mother of two beautiful, intelligent, thriving children - my 5 year old son, Connor, and my 21 month old daughter, Delanie.

Connor is in kindergarten and he loves it. I had to buy him extra math and reading workbooks so he could do more homework because he enjoys sitting at the table with his little sister working. She colors while he works; then he writes her name on her art when they finish. She will take her finished work to the living room and show Grammy and Papa, while her brother explains how he helped with the words on the page.

They laugh. They play. They have friends in the neighborhood. On Saturdays, they go to the library and pick out books to read, we go to church together every Sunday. We go to the beach, and bowling, they love sharks - so we went to the aquarium, and when they wanted to see dinosaurs - we went to the museum.

They are loved. Treasured. And probably a little spoiled by the attention and time they get from their grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. And I would do anything for them.

We worked hard to create this life and I am in need of financial assistance to preserve it. Right now, "doing anything for my children" means asking for help.

I have, with the support of my parents and family, been involved in an extended custody conflict and have now exhausted all options at the district court level. The outcome of the most recent hearings would have my children and I relocated to another state; effectively pulling them from the lives they have built over the course of the last year and a half. This would happen in a matter of weeks with no adjustment time for the children.

I am appealing this decision in a higher court - it is to be argued that there are several standards of law that were not applied when the district court judge made her ruling.

In order to file my appeal I am in need of $10,000. I have already invested my savings, and that of my parents, in the district level court proceedings. To finance the appeal I am selling my wedding band and my violin - the one item of true value that I have cherished for almost 20 years and have spent the better part of my lifetime learning to play.

Even after the sale, I will still be unable to meet the financial terms laid out by the appellate attorney.

I have sought other options, including pro bono appeals lawyers and legal aid; however, the services I need now are beyond the scope of these programs.

There is no pricetag on what my children have built in the last year. The wealth of experiences, the eternal wellspring of love and support they have had the fortune to live surrounded by, the friendships they have made and thrive in; they are priceless. And I would do, and give, anything to preserve it for them.

Jessica Lange once said," The natural state of motherhood is unselfishness. When you become a mother, you are no longer the center of your universe. You relenquish that position to your children."

I ask for whatever help you can offer with the sincerest of thanks for helping me keep my children in the place they call home, with the people they love.
