To whoever may be reading this,
Starting a GoFundMe was never something I imagined doing. I’ve always been the type to carry things on my shoulders, even when I know it is heavy. But at this point, I’ve realized I can’t manage this situation alone anymore - so this is me, humbly asking for help.

My name is Excel, I’m 23, and about three years ago: December 7th 2022 precisely, my mother had a terrible accident which broke her Fibula (the bone on the outer side of her leg, near the ankle joint, leaving the ankle disassembled from both the Tibia and the Fibula). I'm her only child and she has always been my greatest supporter. She had been studying Aerospace Engineering in Ukraine, but during her research visit to Nigeria - her home country, the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out, leaving her unable to return and causing her to lose her sponsorship.

Since then, life has been extremely difficult for her. I was working part-time at Primark back then, just settling into my own accommodation and doing all I could to support her - even taking on commission-only jobs that didn’t work out. Eventually, I started working in Support Work, which allowed me to contribute around £300 per month toward her medication, food, carers (because she couldn't do much on her own) and other essentials.

Reliable in-home carers have also been hard to find, and with those that we found, many of them tried to take advantage of the situation rather than providing genuine help.
My father has been a great help to me personally, especially in guiding and encouraging me as I found my footing in being a Support worker. However, he hasn’t been able to help my mother. As he has another wife which led to the separation of the legal marriage between him and mother.
My mothers family and her extended family initially helped, but as time went on, the delay in the ankle restructuring surgery and complications led them to step back. The surgery finally took place in mid-2023, but by then, she had already endured long periods of pain, limited mobility, and emotional strain.

Right now, she’s still in Nigeria, and the cost of ongoing medical treatment, transportation, and basic needs remains very high.

My goal with this GoFundMe is to raise £2,000, which will go toward:

  • Funding her travel and preparation to Abuja (the capital) to process the reinstatement of her government sponsorship
  • Allowing her to get back on her feet and hopefully finish up the 2 years left of her education.
  • Lastly, covering her ongoing treatment, medication, and check-ups which will be combatted with what I’m already giving her per month

This would also relieve some of the financial pressure I’ve been managing monthly, because it was never about what was coming out monthly from my bank account but about knowing that I couldn't get her out of her current circumstances once and for all: that really bothered me mentally, hopefully raising this Go Fund Me, she can finally get consistent help, get back on her feet, still be useful to the society, finish up her study, get a job and contribute her own quotas in the field of aerospace engineering.

If 250 people were to give just £8 each, we could reach the goal and make a real difference in her recovery and future.

I’ve hesitated to share this for months because of how personal it is, but I’ve come to realize that sometimes we all need a helping hand. I’m putting this out there with faith and hope that together, we can make this happen.

Thank you so much for reading, for caring, and for helping in any way you can.

God bless you.
