Luke's Extra Mile was established to raise money and awareness for the benefit of registered children’s charities in Ireland. We also aim to raise awareness and help educate people about congenital CMV.
Luke, the inspiration for the charity, was born with congenital CMV (cytomegalovirus). CMV is a common virus that presents as cold and flu like symptoms and causes no danger to most people. Luke has microcephaly, cerebral palsy and is high risk for going deaf and having seizures. During the months that followed his birth, Luke’s prognosis implied that he may never walk or even sit on his own. Fortunately, with the help and support from charities such as the Jack & Jill Children's Foundation and the Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) Luke miraculously took his first steps at the age of 18 months. Many children like Luke depend heavily on charities for care, support and at many times for hope of a better future in the face of constant challenges. Luke is nearly 4 now and this is our way to support other families like ours.
