Support for Asylum Seeker

What's Happening?
Julissa  (age 27) and her son Nestor (age 6)  are Honduran citizens escaping from a dangerous situation.  They are waiting to cross the border into the US, having passed the "credible fear" test.  Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) only allows her to leave ICE detention if she has a sponsor, someone who agrees to be responsible for her financially (Zinners).  They are temporarily living in a Jesuit shelter in Nogales, Mexico, near the border. We must purchase air tickets  to get them here.  We are hopeful they will arrive April 2 or 3rd.  They will need help with just about everything, so we will need our community behind us.  They will need rides to doctors, ESOL classes, ICE check-ins, and more.  She will stay with the Zinners for at least 5 months and is not allowed to work during that time. 

Every small contribution of any kind is greatly appreciated.  It will go directly to the family's  needs.  Roz and David Zinner are working with SURJ, Showing Up for Racial Justice, https://www.freedomforimmigrants.org/alternatives-to-detention,  which coordinates with the shelter on the border. 
The family is also being supported in many ways by Columbia Jewish Congregation and the Universalist Unitarian Church in Columbia.  Since they are Catholic, we hope to get them connected with St. John's, which has a Spanish service.

Why Sponsor a Family at the Border?
My grandparents were immigrants from Russia; my in-laws were Holocaust survivors.  People coming from Central and South America now are just like my family members, escaping violence, hunger, and/or persecution, and looking for a better life in the USA.  I've been working on immigration issues with HoCo Indivisible's Immigration Team for a couple years, stirred by Trump's crackdown and continuing violence towards immigrant children and adults.   We have room in our empty nester home to provide shelter and lots of tlc.
