Black Plant-Based Project

My name is Mykela Jackson. I am an 22-year old Aboriginal Black woman with the life purpose to inform, educate and empower. My two businesses, Keiko’s Kitchen LLC and Keiko’s Electric Herbs, are a direct creation of my purpose. Both aim to provide majority-Black communities with accessible & affordable health foods as well as education on food sustainability. The donations obtained from this campaign will be used directly to fund Black plant-based events, pop-ups, entrepreneurs and a larger eco-vegan project in the Northside Minneapolis community.

I started doing pop-ups in April 2019 and have been serving soulful alkaline meals to the community ever since. It has been extremely important for me to use these events to focus on the nourishment and education of people while enabling the flourish of cultures and community.

These projects will shed light on how through institutionalized racism, African Americans continue to face persecution at the hands of the government and society at large. And how the lack of housing and education in our communities inherently bred poverty, which ultimately affected access to healthy food resources. This community has faced chronic under-investment as well as environmental and health injustices for generations. And that is why it is pertinent for us to act now to ensure their prosperity in health and wealth.


I have been actively working towards this mission and have joined with other Black vegan entrepreneurs to make this change happen in Minnesota.  The uprising from George Floyd has sparked the drive of dismantling the capitalistic food system and its consequences—food apartheid, Black land loss, diet-related illness, race-based wealth inequities, and environmental degradation to name a few—while driving real solutions to our communities.
