Cyclone Amphan made landfall in Eastern India on May 20, causing widespread devastation. The cyclone is the strongest to hit the region in over a decade, with wind speeds of 165 kilometers per hour.
A storm surge of 16ft (5m) flooded the area, and over 1 million homes were damaged just in the state of West Bengal. The state government estimated that the storm caused at least ₹1 trillion ($13.2 billion) in damage and directly affected 70 percent of the state's population. State officials described the storm's effects there as worse than that of COVID-19.
The Goal:
We are seeking donations to provide relief to those affected by this destructive storm. All of the proceeds will go to Rotary District 3291 (http://rotary3291.org) and the Bimalendu Ghosh Foundation (https://bghose.org).
Rotary 3291 is the Kolkata branch of the Rotary International (https://www.rotary.org/en) . Its goal is to provide clean water, food, and medical care to the impoverished population of West Bengal. The Bimalendu Ghosh Foundation is an India based nonprofit organization focused on helping underprivileged women and girls develop skills and escape poverty.
Deeply moved by the plight of the families whose houses were completely ravaged by Cyclone Amphan, the associations have decided to redirect their focus to rebuilding homes in West Bengal, as well as providing basic rations of food, medical care, and essential items to the devastated families who have been reduced to poverty with no income in the COVID-19 pandemic.
About Us:
Archish Ray and Shoham Das are two high school students located in the Bay Area raising funds for this devastating cyclone on behalf of their non-profit foundation, Learn Care Share. Originally established to spread Bengali culture and language in the United States, the foundation has evolved and its purpose is to provide educational resources to underprivileged children globally so they can achieve their dreams and uplift their communities.
