My name is Eric Hense. I am a Life Scout in Troop 28 - Cohasset, MA working on my Eagle Scout community project - Sensory Kits for First Responders.
My project is to benefit the community by providing First Responders with the tools they need when responding to people with special needs and Autism. My goal is to provide over 75 sensory kits to the Police and Fire Departments of the surrounding towns of Cohasset, Scituate, Hingham, Hull, Hanover, and Norwell for inclusion in their response vehicles.
I have met with officers from each of these departments and have received strong support and feedback on my project. They have all been trained in special needs response but lack the tools to better assist these individuals.
Each Sensory Kit includes:
- Weighted Pad to provide comfort.
- Noise-cancelling Headphones to protect from loud noises and sirens.
- Communication Visuals developed in conjunction with a special needs teacher.
- White Board and marker to further assist with communication.
- Fidget Toys to keep the person's hands busy.
- Children's Books to entertain and keep the person busy.
- Sturdy "Go" Bag with "Autism Blue" stripe to make it easy to identify in the back of the vehicle.
My project was inspired for my older brother Tommy who has Autism and special needs. This project will help people like him when there is an emergency in the community.
Here I am visiting with local police and fire stations with my prototype sensory kit to get their input.
