As a junior in the Public Health Program at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, I have the amazing opportunity of participating in the Service Learning program in Thailand this upcoming May 2014! While in Thailand I will help with community health projects, teach English lessons, visit historical sites, tour an AIDS hospice, help repair a water filtration system, along with other experiences that will further my cultural immersion.
Locally, I currently work and serve at the Hser Ner Moo Refugee Welcome center. I am mentor for the after school Learning for Life program with 1st and 2nd graders. In this program we plan activities that are geared towards improving reading levels while also acclimating the students to American life. This provides the students with a fun learning environment where they can improve their learning abilities in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable. I am also part of a program called Mentoring for Moo, in which 20 Westminster students are paired with refugee teens. In this program, the mentor and mentee meet weekly to work on homework and build lasting relationships. I work with a young Karen girl from Northern Thailand and am really excited for the opportunity to experience first-hand her home country and be able to connect with her on an even deeper level. The majority of my Learning for Life kids are also from Thailand and this experience will help be able to understand their culture and where they are coming from that much more. I have grown to love this center and its purpose and the people it serves!
I know this trip will further my love for culture, service, and learning. Through my experiences at the Hser Ner Moo Refugee Welcome Center and future experiences in Thailand, I am becoming a lifelong humanitarian and I know that this trip will only help me achieve my goals of working in the Global Health field on an international level.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated! All donations will be applied directly to my travels and living expenses while in Thailand. If you wish to donate to the people that we will be serving in Thailand, I will post updates about fundraisers that the group will be doing throughout the semester! Also, to see what I have been up to and what people on past trips have done, please like the May Term Thailand page on Facebook! Thank you so much for all of your support!!
