Help my grandma beat Breast Cancer

Donation protected

Before you read the story about my Grandma, please ask your family members to get a screening test. The sooner a cancer is diagnosed the better chance it is able to be cured.

Now onto my grandma's story. My grandma is a hard-working and strong woman and I don't think I would be the person I am today without her. Ever since I was young she always helped me out with any problems that I had. She was that one person that was there for me when I didn't want to talk to my Mum about it. She's been supporting me for so long and I just wanted to do something in return just so I could make her see how much I care for her.

As I said before my grandma is a very hard-working woman, she was loyal to the company that she worked for. For 29 years she worked in the same office and enjoyed working there, she was going to retire early once she hit 30 years of working there, however, Breast cancer stopped her with this. Every morning she would get up and walk 30 minutes to her work because she was a very active person, every time I came to Poland she would take me out on my bike and we would go exploring outside of the city and go a full day cycling and enjoy the views. These little things are things I took for granted and I wish I can still do one day.

However, one day she realised that she had a bump on her breast and immediately went to get it checked, I wasn't informed of this until later on when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She kept this from me because she wanted to stay strong for everyone, which is one thing I regret she did because I wish I knew before so I could have helped from the start.  On the other hand, my step-brother who is 7 hasn't experienced all of the things that I have and I wish that he still can once he is older. I want him to have his grandma just like I had her and was able to spend time with her.

We all know COVID-19 has made an impact on everyone and this is one thing that has caused me to do this, all of my family has been impacted by it. Due to the policies around the type of breast cancer my grandma has, it isn't funded by the government and it isn't covered within her life insurance. All of our savings that my family had have been spent on being able to live during this pandemic.

The medicine that my grandma was prescribed is called Trastuzumab the costs are very expensive due to Polish living standards, the whole of the prescription costs around 42,000 zl (PLN) which is around £8300-£8600 (GBP). The funds will go towards paying off her medicine after she finishes her Radiotherapy sessions. (She has already finished her Chemotherapy sessions at the moment I am writing this).

If I was able to reach my donation goal I genuinely think that my grandma would be proud of me and it would mean everything to me to see her enjoying her life just like she used to. Every second with your family is priceless.  Even if I don't reach the donation goal I still know I would have spread awareness regarding breast cancer.

All I want people to take from this is to check-up on their family members and ask them if they're dealing with anything. As well as asking their family members to take a screening test just to be safe <3
