Bridge The Gap Youth Outreach is a group of youth who assembled in 2011 to work in and serve our community. In June of 2013, the Kansas African Affairs Commission, in the Office of the Governor, asked us to develop a workshop for educators concerning working with students in poverty. Together with our Youth Advisor, Ms. A'Jay Scipio, we accepted the challenge and developed the science based program, "It's Not Rocket Science!"
In this program, we use the Periodic Table of the Elements to explore the correlation between education and poverty. This real world approach to science, as well as having the concepts taught by youths, has proven to be a powerful combination!
Our presentation for the Kansas Alliance of Black School Educators was such a huge success that we received subsequent requests to present "It's Not Rocket Science!" to the Kansas Action for Children board of directors, as well as the 2013 Kansas Volunteer Commission Conference.
We've recently received notification that our hard work and dedication has been recognized on a national level! We have been invited to present "It's Not Rocket Science!" at the 25th Annual National Service-Learning Conference in Washington D.C., April 9 "“ 12, 2014.
Before the Bridge the Gap Youth Outreach delegation can attend and present "It's Not Rocket Science!" at the 2014 conference; we need to raise money to pay for our registration, airfare, lodging, meals, and other expenses. Our registration deadline is March 14, 2014 and we have a variety of fundraising activities planned. We would greatly appreciate any assistance that you could provide to help us reach our goal of raising $8,850.00
