What is “lunch shaming?” It happens when a child can’t pay a school lunch bill. Embarrassing or punishing children is not the way to deal with a school lunch account that is in arrears.
Food insecurity for children is a significant problem in the Quakertown Community School District and in some cases, school lunch may be the only meal a child gets. Although 35% of Quakertown’s 5000 students receive free or reduced-price lunches, nearly 500 students last year accumulated lunch debt.
