6 Miles and £2 to Support People Seeking Sanctuary
A day pass for the bus in Bristol costs £6.
The current support from the Home Office for people waiting for a decision on their asylum claim is £49.18/week, just over £7/day.
Asylum seekers who have been placed in Initial Accommodation Hotels where food is provided receive only £8.86/week, barely £1/day.
The numbers simply don't add up.
Many refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol walk up to 6 miles to attend their important legal and medical appointments. To give themselves enough allowance to spend on other essentials such as phone credit (to speak with family members) and printing of legal documents.
In collaboration with Bristol City of Sanctuary, Bristol Student Action for Refugees is fundraising for their Transport Fund , which provides free bus travel for people seeking sanctuary in our city. Many refugees and asylum seekers — who are often scattered around Bristol — have to travel to the city centre for appointments or report to Patchway for immigration. However, these errands are complicated by the limited compensation they receive.
We will be holding several fundraising events, including a run, a Ceilidh, an informational workshop and a film screening. We would love to see you there - anyone is welcome!
Every £2 donated will help fund a bus ticket. Every pound will also be matched by FirstBus, which means your donation will go a long way in resettling those who have come a long way to seek sanctuary. If you would like to provide a regular donation, you can also do so on Bristol City of Sanctuary's fundraiser page.
