Help Formerly Incarcerated FTP Organizer Hit the Road to Build for the Movement!
One of our FTP organizers, Villainus, is ready to travel across the country to connect with folks, deliver abolitionist trainings, perform shows and help build!
The problem is cash… Villainus works paycheck to paycheck and has a lot of upfront costs needed to get the tour started. These expenses include transportation, food, equipment repairs necessary to make the trip happen. In sum, the cost to get the trip started is a minimum of $1250, but $2500 could be necessary for potential emergency costs.
FTP Road Trip Agenda
Villainus will start traveling on a tour throughout all 50 states in the next few months. The aim is to visit over 50 cities in each state that includes stops in: Portland, Oakland, Reno, San Antonio, Gainesville, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and many more! Each stop will include both a benefit concert for abolitionist causes and community conversations/workshops about current FTP campaigns. The goal of the tour is to build the abolitionist network, provide direct action support, and bring attention to critical issues within the prison industrial complex.
(A discussion between currently incarcerated organizers and political prisoners at the 2019 Fight Toxic Prisons Convergence).
FTP Tour Outcomes
Bailouts- Through collaboration with local organizers the tour will provide funding for the release of socially marginalized and economically disenfranchised people of color and political prisoners.
Political Engagement- Villainus’ unique insight as a formerly incarcerated person will be utilized to discuss the current issues in the prison system at local, state, and federal levels.
Art as a Resistance Strategy- The performances on the tour will be not only be used to generate money for abolitionist causes but they will also show how art can be used to supply emotional and social support for prisoners.
(A bailout in July 2019 organized by Gainesville IWOC w/ support from FTP).
On the Name-
Villainus is a combination of the English and Latin for someone who works the villa, also known as a plantation. The reason for the name Villainus is to embody the struggle of the ancestors who laid down their lives to liberate our people; from the Haitian revolutionaries to the black rebels in Charleston. No matter how they demonize us we will continue to hold the high ground because "it's our duty to fight for freedom, it's our duty to win.".
(A demonstration outside a prison in Alabama one of our organizers supported and that we attended on our QTPOC FTP Southern Solidarity Tour).
