We have been "raising food fit to eat" for ourselves and interns here at Falster Farm. The demand is growing as more and more folks become aware of what is happening with 'factory farming' and folks 'in the know' want to buy food from local farmers who they know and trust. People want healthy food for their families and when they find it, they don't want to lose the source.
We can meet that need if we have consistent water to grow grass for the livestock we raise on the farm. We have a lot of supporters and while they may not want a whole cow, they do want real food and they can secure it for themselves and others by partnering with us in purchasing a deep well.
A deeper water well will give us the ability to do a "Serengeti-style" grazing system that has proven to be highly successful in the south. This produces a much more nutrient dense pasture so that more cows can be raised in the same amount of space. This is especially important considering these are grass-fed cows...they aren't your typical factory-farmed cows, imprisoned knee-deep in their own feces, living on antibiotics and GMO corn that is trucked in.
Digging a typical shallow well of less than 50 feet is not a big deal. In fact, we already have one of those and it goes dry with one garden watering, leaving us dependent on city water for the house. What is needed is for the required volume is a deep well of 275-450 feet with 4-inch diameter piping and a pump attached to a 3-phase motor. All this raises costs by orders of magnitude. Then the water needs to be piped to various fields and gardens.
