Help Len Be Self-Sufficient

My name is Lynne and I am a Professional Organizer. I first met Len in January and have been assisting and advocating for him ever since.

Len is a kind and grateful man who needs a car to get to doctor appointments, therapy, and for regular errands.

He has experienced incredible loss in his life. He lost his Mom at age nine and his Dad at age 24. After working at a steel company for 24 years, he lost his job because of serious heart disease. These things, coupled with severe depression and a dissolved engagement, led to bankruptcy and hoarding issues.

Len reached out for help with his hoarding issues in January of this year. His sincere ask for help captured my attention. I committed to work with Len pro bono. However the job seemed larger than I alone could handle. Having worked with the crew of the Lifetime TV show “Hoarders,” I pitched his story and he was accepted. In June he began the life-changing journey to live a different life.

Since filming the “Hoarders” episode, I have been providing Aftercare services which include organizing services and serving as his advocate. We have set up a filing/mail system, are working on repairing his credit, set up therapy appointments, investigated his health care plan, and continued to sort through remaining areas in his house.

Len’s car broke down in February and he has felt like a prisoner in his own house ever since. Because of his heart condition and weak legs, it is not safe for Len to walk 10 minutes to catch a bus.  He desperately wants to get back to swim class to build up his strength, attend church, get to his new therapist specializing in hoarding, and do regular errands.

Len’s computer skills are about nil. He never heard of “go fund me.” I threw it out there because we’ve been trying to find a car and he’s been denied three 22% APR loans because of his 2005 bankruptcy (which we are working to fix). He was approved for a credit union loan but he had to have a co-signor, which is not an option because he doesn’t have any family.

It isn’t a hot-rod or a gas-guzzler that Len is seeking. We found a Kia Spectra for $5,500. He has $1,000 saved and will scrap his 1996 Avalon for $250.  He is on disability and can pay his bills. He is so beat down. It will take him a year to save up for a car. Part of Len’s healing is getting out of his house. Having a car would allow this to happen.

This man has been experienced extreme adversity in his life yet he remains focused on doing what he needs to do to overcome his challenges.  I want to help him.

I don’t know how Len will be portrayed on TV. Yes, he wanted to keep some things. Now, each week when we work together, he is donating 90% of what we sort. Len made us aware that there were two guns in the house. The police removed while we were there. He has no criminal record. Len is selling the guns and putting the money in the car fund.  My experience with Len has been completely positive.

If you financially cannot make a donation, please consider liking this post, sharing it, and please keep Len in your prayers.

Thank you.
