It's hard to put into words a response to "How are you doing?" when life goes from bad to worse.
In May, we noticed that Vern had started to struggle with finding the right words when speaking. Suspecting a stroke, the endless doctor visits and tests began. First it was yes, of course that's what it is. Then no. Back and forth until one doctor said, "It's Creutzfeldt-Jakobs". Confirmed by the Mayo a few weeks later, we were heartbroken. A disease with no cure. A disease that moves fast. A disease that will rob us of the man who bests us at backgammon, flips tires up steep hills in the name of 'health', and leads discussions with the passion of someone who clearly loves learning for the sake of learning. How could something so rare (a disease diagnosed in 1 out of every ONE MILLION people) happen to Vern?
Already his steps are smaller, even though we treasure each one a little bit more. Because this disease includes increased sensitivity to loud noises and potential hallucinations, we have decided for his safety and comfort to move him from the bustling metropolis of Minneapolis, to a quiet place on the outskirts of Monticello, IA where everything he needs is on one level.
Because this disease is progressing fast, we're doing everything we can to make Vern as safe and comfortable at the new location as quickly as possible. Projects like repairing the walking ramp and improving accessibility in the house. Unfortunately, even we have limitations. We know these are difficult and uncertain times, but we hope you will consider making a donation as we try and make what time we have left with Vern as enjoyable for him as we can. We are so grateful to you all.
