House Homeless in Hotels, Stop the Spread of COVID

San Francisco is under a necessary shelter-in-place along alongside strong social distancing recommendations from the San Francisco Department of Public Health.
But our unhoused neighbors living in congregate settings like shelters, Navigation Centers and encampments can't stay home and effectively socially distance. If we don't allow all of our residents to socially distance, it's not just a risk to the unhoused, but it's also a risk to housed people and our health care hospital systems.
With thousands of vacant hotel rooms and apartment units, we are pushing for the City to take this on and ramp up acquisition of thousands of units to house those who are unsheltered.
Supervisor Dean Preston has secured hotel rooms in District 5 for homeless families and women at Providence Foundation's D5 emergency shelters. The effort starts with seniors and people with underlying health issues that put them in vulnerable categories.
By housing shelter residents in hotel rooms, this project will both help those residents and thin the remaining population at these two shelters to allow expanded social distancing. It will be
