My son-in-law, Travis Allred, was diagnosed with epilepsy seven years ago. It has changed the quality of his work life significantly and he and his family have been battling the financial stresses and insecurity associated with his diagnosis. The family dynamics have had to change as only one can drive and run errands. Life has been about waiting for the next seizure. Within the last few months their frequency and intensity have increased. Normal prescription medicines have not worked.
Doctors at UTSW will be performing a brain procedure on Tuesday, January 9th, that will help pinpoint the sources of his epileptic seizures and ultimately provide them with direction to restore normalcy to his life. For the first time in seven years, the family has glimmer of hope. They will perform a Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) and he will be monitored at UTSW's epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) for about ten days.
Travis has not been employed since late November. Work during the past few years has also been sporadic. Railroad disabilty benefits are around $200/week. That's very difficult for a family of four to survive on let alone pay bills. Their resources have been tapped out.
We are not talking about a lazy person or someone not willing to work. We are talking about an affliction that creates financial insecurity for even the hardest worker.
Many have offered their prayers, but unfortunately, that's not enough to cover medical bills and deductibles and day to day expenses of running a household with four school age children. As a family, we've banded together, but they need your financial support during these next few weeks and month(s) to catch up on bills resulting from these extenuating circumstance. The bills as you can imagined have accumulated quickly.
Realistically, Travis will be out of commission for ten days and possibly more until he's been given a medical green light to endeavor work. We hope that with this procedure and possibly further surgery and or treatment that they can manage his seizures for him to resume 90% normalcy.
Imagine yourself with a family of six without income. Now please give and let others know.
