                                                          One Grape At A Time

"Did you know that 39.4 million Americans live in low income communities of color where it is easier to purchase a grape soda than a handful of grapes?"

We live in a society that is still dealing with the negative consequences of segregation and Redlining practices.  As a result of past practices and many others, health inequities have arisen in communities of color.  One of many inequities is the lack of access to healthy foods in minority communities - this is called the Grocery Gap.  This gap has caused many African American families to live in food deserts where grocery stores are extremely far away or nonexistent. Because low-income neighborhoods have a plethora of fast food restaurants and a limited amount of healthy food options, this population is at a higher risk for obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other-health related concerns. I'm raising money through my organization, Give A Grape, to benefit Hebni Nutrition Consultants Inc., as we work together to deliver fruits and vegetables to underrepresented communities.  Please help us close.....The Grocery Gap.

Who is Hebni?
Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Inc. is a community-based, not for profit agency formed in 1995 to educate high-risk, culturally diverse populations about nutrition strategies to prevent diet-related diseases.  Hebni is committed to reducing health disparities among high risk minority populations by providing nutrition strategies to decrease, manage and delay chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and hypertension. They also provide the Fresh Stop Mobile Market which launched in 2015 to decrease food insecurity in food deserts throughout Central Florida by providing fresh produce at affordable prices. The Fresh Stop Mobile Market utilizes a repurposed bus to travel to low-income neighborhoods in Orange & Seminole County. Hebni and Give a Grape will drive positive health outcomes and create a road map for generational change for families affected by diet related diseases.

Why Now?
COVID-19 puts underrepresented minority communities at a higher risk for death. Consequently, now more than ever, greater access to healthy foods should be a top priority because a balanced diet can reduce mortality rates.

Who Am I?
My name is Olivia Allen and I'm a Senior at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida.  I had the idea to raise money and awareness for the Grocery Gap after taking a summer class entitled "Black Lives Matter Less: How Structural Racism Affects Health." In this class, my eyes were opened to the numerous health disparities and inequities that negatively impact African-Americans.  After learning about these health disparities, I decided to take action by addressing food deserts in my community.  I also wanted to express my creativity by making bracelets that promote my cause.  Check out my Twitter page @GiveAGrape.

Thanks in advance for your contribution and don't forget to leave your name and address so I can send you a Give A Grape bracelet.
