PLEASE DONATE TO HELP STOP AN UGLY, UNIMAGINATIVE, OVERSIZE DEVELOPMENT FROM BEING IMPOSED ON THE VAUXHALL CONSERVATION AREA
A public inquiry will start on 22 Oct 2024 into planning refusal for redevelopment of the site at 40-46 Harleyford Road. Lambeth refused this application on 7 grounds including harm to the conservation area, unacceptable loss of light to nearby homes, and the negative impact of the design on the streetscape. The building would contain no affordable or social housing and the developer is likely to pay less than £7,000 in lieu of any affordable housing provision, representing the amount it claims would be left over after deduction of all costs (including its own profit, of course).
The developer is trying to overturn the decision on appeal. There is significant opposition from local residents who do not oppose redevelopment but would like to see a building which better respects the character of the conservation area. At the inquiry the developer will be represented by a barrister and present evidence from 4 expert witnesses. Our local campaign group, Save Our Conservation Area (SOCA), we will be making its case but with a fraction of the developer’s resources – so we need your help!
Have you ever visited Bonnington Square, Vauxhall Grove or Harleyford Road? Have you enjoyed the tranquil oasis with its community gardens and cafes? Please help preserve the unique character of this area by donating to our fighting fund and stopping this over-sized development. We need to raise £15,000. All the money raised will be used to pay for legal, planning and expert witnesses to uphold Lambeth’s original decision. Please help.
