Help My Son Overcome the Odds & Build a Future in Sports Journalism
Hi, my name is Esi, and I’m a mother on a mission to give my son the future he deserves—after a lifetime of fighting for his survival and his right to be supported.
⸻
From the NICU to Now – A Lifelong Fight
My son was born at just 24 weeks—so fragile, he could fit into the palm of my hand. From the moment he entered this world, he was in a fight for his life. He spent weeks on a ventilator, battling chronic lung disease, a hole in his heart, and life-threatening infections. At 26 weeks, he underwent emergency surgery for a severe bowel condition and lived with a stoma bag. He’s had multiple surgeries—on his eyes, brain, and hernias—but he survived.
What most people didn’t see was what happened behind the scenes.
I was also unwell. I experienced serious health issues of my own, and for two years, I was unable to work while caring for him.
That period of our lives broke me in many ways—emotionally, physically, and financially. But I never stopped fighting for him.
⸻
The Struggles Didn’t End There
As he grew older, the challenges shifted from physical health to emotional and educational battles. He was bullied at school, misunderstood by teachers, and constantly overlooked. I’ve spent years fighting for assessments, begging for speech and language therapy, and pushing for an ASD (autism) diagnosis. We’ve been lost in a broken system.
I fought hard for a proper EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), but the process is long, exhausting, and often defeating. Through it all, I’ve been his advocate, carer, and only voice—while carrying the weight of bills, missed work, and the cost of private care where the state failed to provide.
We are still living with the financial impact of that time, and with the emotional toll of never being given the help we so desperately needed.
⸻
⚽ His Dream: Sports Journalism
Despite all this, my son is incredible.
He lights up when he talks about football. He doesn’t just watch the game—he analyses it, studies tactics, and follows the stats like a pro. His dream is to become a sports journalist. He wants to take everything he’s been through and turn it into a story worth sharing—to inspire others like him.
That dream gives him hope. It gives him purpose. I just want to give him the chance to pursue it.
But right now, we can’t do it on our own.
