Building clean water filters in Tanzania

Mizizi Ya Mafanikio is a small organisation with big goals dedicated to fostering sustainable development throughout Tanzania. Our mission revolves around the belief that connecting and collaborating on projects is pivotal for achieving enduring development. The aims of the organisation goes to support the 17 Global Goals for a sustainable future. The meaning of Mizizi Ya Mafanikio is "Roots to Success", which we aim to achieve through our key areas: Clean Water Initiative, Women Empowerment and Permaculture Farming Education.

When we first visited our partnered Maasai community in Oldonyosambu, Tanzania, we were shocked to see the first hand effects of contaminated water. The community desperately depends on a singular water source, a government pipeline stemming from the nearby Mount Meru. Whilst this source provides enough water, the volcanic soil on Mount Meru leads to levels of fluoride 6 times higher than the WHO recommended limit leading to serious bone diseases affecting the local community. This is especially consequential for children under that age of 5 significantly damaging their development as fluoride weakens their bones during key modelling stages causing a condition known as “Skeletal Fluorosis”. Additionally, the water sources have been shown to contain high amounts of the typhoid bacteria, a disease causing fevers, headaches and fatigue that robs children in Tanzania of 33 million school days per year. We aim to combat these maladies through the implementation of a series of water filters across the Oldonyosambu region, particularly focusing on schools.

Through our project Clean Water Initiative, we are building water filters in the region of Oldonyosambu outside of Arusha providing this community with clean water. We have built one filter at a local school providing around 500 people/day with clean water that is both fluoride and bacterial free. In this community of 10,000 people, our ambition is to install filters across the entire community so they can all have access to clean water.

To be able to succeed in our goal, we need your support by raising funds. All donations for the project is going directly to the installation of new filters and their maintenance (one filter is approximately 1500 British Pounds, Maintenance/year approximately 260 British Pounds), so every donation counts.
