Honoring a Hero’s Legacy

At work on Friday evening, Daniel Hurst was sharing his deep satisfaction with being a nurse: “What a great career that allows you to help others while providing for your family!” He spoke of the honor he felt specializing in Oncology, where he guided patients and families through life-altering diagnoses and challenging treatment journeys. For over 12 years at CHI Memorial Hospital, Daniel dedicated himself to caring for thousands of patients, treating each with kindness and patience. He enjoyed teaching, readily sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm of advancements in Oncology with patients and co-workers.

The abrupt events of Saturday morning, 11/11/23, shocked us all. Daniel experienced a sudden cardiac episode at the end of his shift, leading to emergency surgery that same day. Despite the swift and expert care he received, Daniel passed away on 11/16/23 at the age of 42. His commitment to saving lives continued even after this devastating event, as Daniel, an organ donor, gave the gift of life to several recipients.

Daniel was someone who never met a stranger. While his primary focus was Oncology on 4 East, he occasionally floated to other floors in the hospital- able to adapt to wherever he was most needed. His stories about roller coasters, chicken wings, video games, dogs, and above all his devotion to his family made him known and loved by hundreds of staff members. Working weekend nights allowed him to support his wife, Latoya, of 19 years, and homeschool their 2 children, Amelia, and Alby during the week.

In addition to teaching his children about his love for science, he encouraged them to take chances, embrace adventure, and to stay true to themselves. He instilled in them the values of helping others and reliability. He was fiercely loyal and took commitment seriously, from punctuality at work to celebrating family milestones at the Boathouse at 4PM. He never missed a tattoo appointment – always clearly documented on the calendar at work.

The loss of an exceptional nurse, a skilled meme creator, a cherished friend, and captivating storyteller is deeply felt by 4 East and all who knew Daniel. Yet, the greatest loss is the void his absence leaves in his family’s lives-- learning to navigate life without their beloved dad, husband, brother, and son.
Daniel provided the sole income for their family. Please help us support Latoya, Amelia, & Alby with expenses for bills, education, groceries, clothing, and more. Every donation, regardless of size, will directly benefit the family.
Daniel was a hero to his children, a hero his patients, and he remains a hero in death through his selfless act of organ donation. He is deeply missed.

Your contribution honors Daniel’s legacy of compassion and selflessness. Together, let’s support his family and carry forward his spirit of kindness and generosity.
