Unfortunately, the road of hardship doesn't end there for the Olson family. This past weekend while visiting friends at a cabin, Matthew found himself in a different kind of pain. With what was thought to be a simple puncture wound on his foot, from an object in a lake, Matthew instead was rushed to the emergency room in Spooner WI. While there, it was evident that Matthew's injury was deeply infected. A fever, chills, and no use of his left foot promoted doctors there to request a transport to another hospital for better care and for a surgical consult to rule out flesh eating infection.
Now, at St. Mary's Duluth, we have more answers, but some things are still not clear. Matthew has a bad case of cellulitis, his wound is being cleaned every so often and he is getting rounds of IV antibiotics. He is also on pain killers to help relieve his foot pressure and pain. The good news is that he does not have necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating), but, we do not know for sure what kind of bacteria or infection is within the wound, yet.
This is sure to be a very tough time, again, for Matthew and Lydia. With the birth of their son, an ambulance ride and multiple nights spent in the hospital, the financial burdens on the Olson family are building. Additionally, they are welcoming and expecting a baby girl just after the new year. It would be joyous if we could help the Olson's in getting back on their feet, and back to a place where they can feel some comfort, with less worry.
