Friday 28th June I'm attempting the 24 Hour National 3 Peaks Challenge with a couple friends.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales in less than 24 hours. The total walking distance is 23 miles (37km) and the total ascent is 3064 metres (10,052ft) - twice the ascent of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, over a similar total walking distance. The total driving distance is 462 miles.

I'm fundraising for my niece, Elena. Elena will be 3 years old in September. She was born with Down Syndrome. When she was 5 months old, she ended up in the ICU for respiratory failure, and it took a very long 10 weeks before she was able to come home again. During her admission she was intubated for a few weeks, and then the doctors decided that she needs to have tracheostomy to help to get her off the ventilator. She also had multiple endoscopy procedures when they dilated stenosis that formed on her trachea. Since then she still has the tracheostomy, and the doctors predict she will have it for another year or two.

During the last 6 months Elena was admitted to the hospital multiple times. Whenever she became ill, she required oxygen support. This is when my sister and brother in law decided to buy a oxygen concentrator machine (of course the doctors agreed), as well as extraction pulse oximeter so they can monitor Elena's oxygen levels and can provide oxygen therapy at home.

This all costs a lot of money. Some things are covered by the health insurance, but most of the equipment was paid for by the parents or family.

They buy extra supplements to help boost Elena's immune system, on top of all the materials needed for taking care of the tracheostomy. They attend private OT and pay for weekly equine therapy that is really helping Elena too. They are also starting to use an application on IOS for alternative communication with her as Elena is not able to produce sound through her tube, and is non verbal.

Even though her medical history is pretty complex, Elena is a very happy and bubbly little girl that brings a lot of joy and happiness to all of our family. Contrary to doctor's statements, she recently learned to walk and is now exploring world around her with great interest and speed!

I hope that the money raised here will help towards the costs of the specialised medical equipment they have to buy and any other related expenses that they may incur in caring for Elena. 100% of the donations will go directly towards that.

National Three Peaks Challenge polega na zdobyciu trzech najwyższych szczytów Szkocji, Anglii i Walii w mniej niż 24 godziny. Całkowity dystans pieszy wynosi 23 mile (37 km), a całkowite wzniesienie to 3064 metry (10 052 stóp) - dwa razy więcej niż w przypadku Yorkshire Three Peaks na podobnym dystansie pieszym. Całkowity dystans jazdy wynosi 462 mile.

Zbieram fundusze dla mojej siostrzenicy, Eleny. Elena we wrześniu skończy 3 lata. Urodziła się z zespołem Downa. Kiedy miała 5 miesięcy, trafiła na OIOM z powodu niewydolności oddechowej i minęło bardzo długie 10 tygodni, zanim mogła wrócić do domu. Podczas pobytu na oddziale przez kilka tygodni była zaintubowana, a następnie lekarze zdecydowali, że musi mieć tracheostomię, aby odłączyć ją od respiratora. Przeszła również wiele zabiegów endoskopii, podczas których poszerzono zwężenie, które utworzyło się na jej tchawicy. Od tego czasu nadal ma tracheostomię, a lekarze przewidują, że będzie ją miała przez kolejny rok lub dwa.

W ciągu ostatnich 6 miesięcy Elena była wielokrotnie hospitalizowana. Za każdym razem, gdy zachorowała, wymagała wsparcia tlenowego. To właśnie wtedy moja siostra i szwagier postanowili kupić koncentrator tlenu (oczywiście lekarze się zgodzili), a także pulsoksymetr ekstrakcyjny, aby mogli monitorować poziom tlenu Eleny i zapewnić tlenoterapię w domu. To wszystko kosztuje dużo pieniędzy. Niektóre rzeczy są objęte ubezpieczeniem zdrowotnym, ale większość sprzętu została opłacona przez rodziców lub rodzinę.

Kupują dodatkowe suplementy, które pomagają wzmocnić układ odpornościowy Eleny, a także wszystkie materiały potrzebne do pielęgnacji tracheostomii. Uczęszczają na prywatną terapię OT i płacą za cotygodniową terapię konną, która naprawdę pomaga Elenie. Zaczynają również używać aplikacji na IOS do alternatywnej komunikacji z nią, ponieważ Elena nie jest w stanie wydawać dźwięków przez rurkę i jest niewerbalna.

Mimo że jej historia medyczna jest dość skomplikowana, Elena jest bardzo szczęśliwą i żywiołową dziewczynką, która przynosi wiele radości i szczęścia całej naszej rodzinie. W przeciwieństwie do zaleceń lekarzy, niedawno nauczyła się chodzić i teraz z wielkim zainteresowaniem i szybkością odkrywa otaczający ją świat!

Mam nadzieję, że zebrane tutaj pieniądze pomogą w pokryciu kosztów specjalistycznego sprzętu medycznego, który muszą kupić, oraz wszelkich innych powiązanych wydatków, które mogą ponieść w związku z opieką nad Eleną. 100% darowizn zostanie przekazanych bezpośrednio na ten cel.
