My Volunteer Trip to Rwanda
As 2017 rapidly approaches, I wanted to send this out as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for taking time to read this despite busy holiday schedules. :)
As many of you know, I have been working as a clinical psychologist in the field of trauma and abuse since 2002. In addition to the counseling center that Terry and I own, I have also been working with a non-profit agency, Mending the Soul, in the United States, since 2007. Recently, I was asked to join a trip to Rwanda as a mental health professional to teach and train on trauma. I am incredibly honored to join the team, and Terry and I feel that the timing works well now that our kids are a little older.
I will be in Africa from April 13 through April 26. I will be one of the trainers at a 6 day trauma course for leaders, including pastors, social workers, and other caregivers. The course will be offered in conjunction with Rwandans for Justice. RFJ works closely with government and law enforcement on child sexual abuse cases. In addition to this conference, our group has also been asked to train at one of the churches located in an area that was hit hard by the genocide.
Mending the Soul sends training teams to Africa yearly, and as a non-profit organization does not charge participants, churches, or agencies for the training. I am raising funds for my travel, lodging, and materials and have a funding deadline in February 2017.
Although I am not typically someone to ask others to donate or give, especially knowing how tight budgets can be, I am incredibly honored to volunteer and would love to have you join me in this cause if you choose.
For those that decide to give, I would love to keep you posted on the trip, and I am excited to share with you the impact of the training.
Thank you so much!
Roxane
