The orphans of Peter W. Sayklon Orphanage in Kakata, Liberia need your help! Located in one of the poorest countries in the world which has been devastated by years of civil war as well as the recent Ebola epidemic, this orphanage is severely underfunded and receives only $200 a year from government aid. The 60 children live in open air dormitories with 15 children to a room, and generally only eat the cassava grown at the orphanage, unless other food is donated to them. When the children become ill, they must be taken several miles to the nearest medical care; due to lack of transportation, this is often on foot. To help out this orphanage, we would like to raise money to buy a used car for the orphans' transportation, as well as gas. Any additional money left over will go to food and other essentials for the orphanage. Any little amount would make a huge difference for these adorable kids, so please help!

For disclosure: This campaign is being run by me, Jeanne Billioux, and Nadeeka Rajintha, with the support of many others involved in the Prevail study who have visited the orphanage over the past year. I am from the Washington, DC area, and work in Liberia as a neurologist with the Prevail study looking at the after-effects of Ebola (as disclosure, neither Prevail nor the NIH are involved in this fundraising campaign). Through work in Kakata, Liberia with Prevail, Nadeeka learned of this nearby orphanage's needs. Through multiple visits to the orphanage, we (especially Nadeeka) have formed a strong bond with the orphanage; Nadeeka is now great friends with the pastor who runs the orphanage, as well as several of the orphans. For these reasons, we would love to give these orphans some of the help they need.
