KHLOE’S KEEPERS

Donation protected
This fundraiser was created for our beloved Khloe who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Below is a letter from Khloe’s mother, Nerissa.

Khloe, my sweet and loving 6-year old daughter, is facing a battle that she can’t fight alone. She has been recently diagnosed with cancer, to be specific ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) and she needs all the help she can get to survive and kick cancer in the butt!

Growing up, Khloe has always been sweet and sassy. She is the perfect mix of sugar and spice and everything nice. Her eyes glimmer with happiness with the simplest of surprises. She is just the picture of a perfectly happy and healthy girl… until June 19th, 2021.

On that day, she wasn’t her usual energetic self. She looked weak and tired. Her face was a vision of pallor. She had a fever and was suffering from constipation. I thought it was just seasonal fever but the next day I finally decided to take her to a pediatrician who immediately prescribed a laxative to relieve Khloe. The pediatrician also recommended several laboratory tests that Khloe had to undergo. Upon receiving the test results, the doctor recommended that Khloe should be immediately hospitalized for emergency blood transfusion.  Her hemoglobin level was low at 40.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions and protocols, we had to dash from one hospital to the next until finally, at 4 am of June 20, we ended up in UST Hospital, which had a blood bank and was also willing to admit her. They redid her tests just to confirm the accuracy of her previous lab tests and they found her hemoglobin level had dipped to 31. The tests also showed a lot of irregularities in her blood. Eventually, she received her first blood transfusion.

Up to this time, I was still hopeful that after a few days in the hospital while under the care of medical experts, Khloe will be able to go home soon -- healthy and happy like her usual self. That was the hope and prayer that I silently and fervently kept in my heart but when the doctor finally told me that she had leukemia, I felt my heart split open, spilling all the hope I have held on to all this time. I felt utterly helpless, hopeless, and scared as I watch Khloe lay on the hospital bed, completely unaware that she has just been diagnosed with a disease that no child should ever have to suffer from.

Still reeling from the shock, I barely heard the doctors say that they will be harvesting her bone marrow to know the type of leukemia she has.

In 3 days, the doctors came back with a diagnosis of ALL and a recommendation of a round of chemo treatments.

On June 26th, Khloe received her first treatment. After a few hours, in her weakest voice, she verbalized the thought that I had been suppressing all this time “Why is this happening to me, Mommy?” as she looked at me sadly.

I, too, felt weak and lost but I know I have to be strong for her, for all of us. As a single mother of 2 daughters, I knew from the get-go that I will do everything in my power to protect them from all dangers, seen and unseen. Life as a single mother is tough and it got much tougher because of Covid-19. I work as a hotel staff but due to the pandemic, my family and I have been living off whatever savings I had. Life has been difficult but I wasn’t hopeless. For 6 months last year, I didn’t have any work but I had my 2 girls and our health, and that was enough for me. Yet with Khloe being sick, I feel completely out of my depth. I am barely making enough money to cover our everyday living expenses and with the costs of countless doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, and chemo treatments over an extended period, you can just imagine how I felt like I was drowning in a sea of hopelessness and helplessness.

Yet when I look at my Khloe, I know that I have to keep on fighting. The road ahead for Khloe is going to be a challenging one, but I know that Khloe is a fighter and so am I.

So here I am humbly seeking help from the world, from all of you to be one of Khloe’s Keepers.  I hope that you can find it in your heart to pray for Khloe’s complete recovery and to extend any financial aid towards her treatments.  Any amount will be of great help.

Kindly share this link too so we can gather an army of Khloe’s keepers as she takes on the battle of her life.

Thank you for your support and God bless every one of you!!!

Yours sincerely,

Nerissa Buco
