Initial Program Details Below:
Around Thanksgiving in 2015 I saw an amazing thing on CNN where Michael Dukakis, former governor of Massachusetts, made soup out of the holiday turkey carcass.
The thought occurred to me that I could take the one from my family meal, turn it into gallons of soup, and service it to the area homeless. Long story short, it turned out great. Soon after I sent an eBlast to friends and business associates asking for them to save their carcasses. Within a week I had commitments from almost 30 families and ended up making soup throughout the winter and distributing it through Metro Relief of Columbus.
Here is a newspaper article about last year in Columbus Dispatch:

I've also been working with Basement Blessings of Columbus as their interim Executive Director doing more outreach to and assistance of those in need in Central Ohio. Basement Blessings receives donations of coats and blankets, among many other things, and is then able to partner with other organizations for distribution.
This year, I'd like to expand the Turkey Soup effort provide not only soup, but also coats and blankets to area homeless at least twice per month for December, January, February and March.
The coats and blankets will be provided by Basement Blessings. The distribution point for some soup will be in conjunction with Metro Relief. At the Metro site, we can provide attendees with a "to go" soup in addition to what they receive on site and by being mobile we can move to nearby homeless camps and reach out to those who do not visit Metro. Turkey components will be provided by friends and family member just as last year. We already have large stock pots, a location to prep the soup and a large deep freezer to store the turkey's.
I am seeking funding to buy the mobile soup containers, ladles, carrots, celery, onion and rice for the soup, and a few dollars for fuel. The budget is as follows:
Cambro soup holders 4 = $480.00
8oz Ladels 4 = $24.00
16 Oz Soup Containers (500 Ct.) 2 = $80.00
Lids (1000 ct.) 1 = $30.00
Spoons (1000 Ct.) 1 = $8.00
Total Start Up Cost - $622.00
Celery (4 bunch) x 8 weekends = $64.00
Carrots (4 bunch) x 8 weekends = $64.00
Onions (8 large) x 8 weekends = $64.00
Rice (Large bag) x 8 weekends = $48.00
Fuel (3 gallons) x 8 weekends = $75.00
Total 8 Week Costs - $315.00
Annual Total $937.00
To account for the inevitable unknown factors that come up, I am sking for funding in the amount of $1,100 to take this project thorugh the winter. In the event we are able to raise additional funds the effot can be expanded to additional areas of the city or have increased frequency.
