Mzansi Calling: Help Keep Amelia’s Dream Alive
Donation protected
My name is Monica Trichardt, and my sister-in-law is a resident at Amelia Care Centre. For our family—and for over 125 intellectually and physically disabled adults—Amelia is not just a care facility; it’s a lifeline.
Support 125 adults with disabilities facing the loss of their only home
If you grew up in South Africa, you’ll know that care homes like Amelia Care Centre often carry the weight of an entire community—doing the hard work that so often goes unseen, underfunded, and under-supported.
For nearly five decades, Amelia Care Centre has provided a safe and loving home for over 125 intellectually and physically disabled adults—including 59 orphans with no family to care for them. Residents receive meals, accommodation, dignity, and daily stimulation from a small but dedicated team.
✨ More Than a Home — A Place to Shine
At Amelia, we believe in celebrating every individual’s potential and joy. We help our residents achieve incredible things—from supporting athletes with Down syndrome to reach the Special Olympics, to organising dances where our girls feel like princesses for a night.
❗ A Sudden Funding Slash — 60% Gone Overnight
In June 2025, the Department of Social Development cut Amelia’s government funding by 60%. Overnight, subsidies dropped to cover only 50 of our 125 residents.
That leaves us R170,000 short every single month (about $9,000 / €8,500).
This gap means we no longer have enough to:
- Cover food, accommodation, and care for all residents
- Provide basic essentials like toiletries
- Pay staff to run workshops and maintain safe conditions
Why We’re Turning to You
We know times are tough everywhere. But if you’re living abroad—and still feel connected to South Africa—please help protect the most vulnerable back home.
Whether you can give €10, $25, or more, every donation brings us closer to bridging this urgent gap. Even the smallest amount makes a real difference.
How You Can Help
We are asking for urgent donations, big or small. Every contribution helps close the monthly gap. You can:
- Donate now – every contribution helps us cover critical shortfalls in care and daily costs.
- Share this campaign – spread the word to friends, family, and your network.
- Sponsor a resident – cover part of their monthly care cost. (Contact Amelia Care Centre to learn more.)
Transparency
This campaign is managed by Monica Trichardt. Amelia Care Centre also has Hope for Amelia’s Future, a registered campaign on BackaBuddy in South Africa. However, the charity cannot directly receive international GoFundMe transfers, so the funds will first be received in a dedicated Bunq sub-account and then transferred in full to Amelia Care Centre’s South African account.
Full records of every transfer will be kept and made available to any donor on request.
