Casa Hogar Canon Buena Vista Orphanage Funding

Donation protected
My name is Elizabeth Pecknold Lonergan and I have had the opportunity of living in Ensenada for over 20 years. I came to Ensenada to teach advanced English at UABC, the University here.

I became acquainted with the Casa Hogar Canon Buena Vista in El Zorrillo through one of the members of the dentists who donate their time through 1000 Smiles. I made the trip out to see the small dental clinic that the dentists had funded and also to check out some sewing programs for the local single mothers at risk.

The orphanage has struggled for several years when tourists and their sponsors became afraid to come to Mexico. Unfortunately Mexico got a bad rating from the news media. The Directors, Soledad and Eliseo, scramble each month to keep the orphanage running, the cost of water, which has to be trucked in, is $600. a month.  The town of El Zorrillo is very poor and they do not have water, drainage systems or garbage service.

The local people and a few government agencies help with food but their budgets are limited.  Each month they get chicken, cooking oil, rice and beans.

The children are helpful and well behaved. They have a loving home where they are safe. Many were abandoned or in situations that were terrible. In this place they can grow, learn and be loved.

These are the water trucks that come several times per week. The garden was planted with the help of a group who showed them how to set up the drip system and the lip them to learn to collect grey water to grow their garden. The children love their garden and are looking forward to their first crop of tomatoes and chilies.

A volunteer teacher comes out to give the children English classes every week and he has the help of two young girls who speak English and are a part of the Home. They have very sad stories.

They also love crafts and made these baskets out of newspaper. They sold out over Mothers Day.

Please help these children to have a better life and to be able to become achievers and strong members of the community. Through love and caring these beautiful children can help to change the world. It is the children who will be the next leaders. Let's give them the help and love they need.
