Taking a year off (or maybe a little bit more, sorry Mom) was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. Giving me one of the biggest opportunities I have ever received- being able to scratch off my top wish of 217 wishes on my bucket list at 18 years old. July 18th 2016 I will be starting a 6 week Forest Conservation project in Madagascar with the IVHQ non-profit organization. Yes; you read that right….MADAGASCAR! I’m sure most of you reading this have watched Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, Melman the giraffe and a couple sneaky penguins finally escape captivity to find themselves in Madagascar among merry lemurs. If you haven’t, you’re missing out. Believe it or not, there is much more to Madagascar than a DreamWorks production and lots of lemurs. Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island. World renowned for it’s biodiversity, 70% of the flora and 90% of the fauna found cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
Unfortunately, many endemic species in Madagascar are threatened due to deforestation, habitat destruction and agriculture fires. During my 6 weeks of the Forest Conservation project I will be involved in studying and monitoring the diversity and abundance of species on Nosy Komba such as lemurs, reptiles, birds and butterflies. My studies will help identify changes in forest dynamics, populations and habitat health, and to identify potential localized threats.
This is the part where I beg you for money. Every cent donated will go directly towards my (extremely expensive) flight to Nosy Be, Madagascar and not for cervezas for myself I promise.
