We are the Rankin Family. Let us tell you a little bit about our adoption story......
After 3 years in the foster care system, our daughter made her 10th and final move into our home on December 2014. Her story is much the same as any child who has been in foster care. Addiction, abuse, and neglect has robbed her of all the hope and wonder that childhood should’ve brought to her. The betrayal of her birthparents has had a lasting and profound effect on her ability to feel loved, safe, and trust that her family is a safe place.
Her adoption was finalized in April of 2015. This past year has been a whirl wind of emotions as we all have been trying to learn how to be a family. When adopting an older child whom has been in the foster care system, it is common for them to come with lots of exposure to trauma. For many kids, this makes it very difficult to attach to their adoptive parents and feel comfortable and safe when life is not chaotic. Therefore she often goes to great extremes to feel comfortable in our home by bringing chaos to calm her tough feelings. Our daughter has experienced more loss and dissappointment than one little girl should ever know.
This August our family could have the opportunity to participate in a Family Bonding Camp that will be held in Oklahoma for the first time! This camp is lead by Nancy Thomas, whom has helped tens of thousands of children and families through therapeutic parenting techniques that allows these kiddos to heal. It is only once the child begins to heal, that they can then attach to their adoptive parents.
We are currently working towards raising the funds needed to get our family of 6 to The Family Bonding Camp this August. Our hope is that this is a turning point for our daughter, where we can begin to break down the barriers that years of neglect and trauma have caused. We also hope that she will begin to grow and flourish, and build up her self-confidence so that she can learn, make friends, trust and love. We are hopeful that she will begin to heal her heart and mind, and become strong!
We need help to support our daughter on her journey to heal her heart and mind. For those who are able, we could use financial assistance as we raise the funds needed for camp. Your prayers and words of encouragment are also appreciated.
We thank you in advance, and are grateful for the people that have been placed in our lives to help one little girl to finally feel at HOME.
Thank you,
The Rankin Family
