Hi, I’m Lucy. I’m 26 and, throughout my life, I’ve experienced various levels of sexually motivated incidents, largely from men.
The vast majority of women in my life, and that I follow in the media, have also experienced some extent of sexual assault (SA) and/or sexual harassment and sexual violence.
Every so often this issue will come to the forefront of the media and there will be lots of discussions. However, the problem persists and disproportionately affects women more than men (3.3% vs 1.2%, respectively; Office for National Statistics, 2023). The volume of sexual offences recorded by police has increased over the last decade (ONS, 2023), though, many offences go unreported.
In order to raise more awareness for the importance of this issue, and to empower those who have experienced these awful situations, I am raising money to put on an event which will be a celebration of women and queer identities and our right to feel safe and supported by our communities.
I have not set a date for the event *YET* however, once I decide a venue and have discussions on cost I will continuously update this page so you know where your donations are going.
What I can say so far:
- it will be Birmingham based
- there will likely be a chilled day event (think charity stalls, coffee, pastries, speakers, maybe even some yoga)
- and a more lively evening event (think live music, performers, more speakers, food etc)
The aim of this fundraiser is to make this event a safe space for a community of people that have ever felt scared to attend an event due to these issues and/or just scared full stop.
The money raised here will all go DIRECTLY to paying for fees including venue, food, performers etc. Any left over money will be sent to the Rape and Sexual Violence Project and GINA - 2 brilliant Birmingham based services helping survivors.
