Hi everyone, this fundraiser is for Nasir salaam. At the young age of 17 the justice system failed again. Growing up in the rough streets of New Jersey. Teenage African American boy was unjustly charged. His two Caucasian co defendants received slaps on the wrists. One received less than three years in prison. The other received a drug program. While Nasir received 40 years in prison.
We are seeking a lawyer that can legitimately represent him, With his appeal for a new trial. The paid lawyer that represented him at 17 coerced him into a plea that doubled after his sentencing. The court has denied his appeals for years. Even after his lawyer admitted in court that he advised him to take a plea deal. That admitted guilt was used against him at trial.
New juvenile laws have been proposed to reduce the time for those who got caught in the system as children. Based on scientific brain studies proving mistakes are prone to happen. When the circumstances and lifestyles of a child are unusually harsh. Their instincts resort to mere survival.
During Nasir’s incarceration he authored a book titled “flaws of imperfection”. He evolved into the best version of himself by taking accountability. He understands the mistakes his actions as a child have caused.
Here’s a message from Nasir himself.
I evolved by knowing who I am and who I am not. I’ve became goal oriented. It took hardship to become selfless. To remember the love and care that stems from the likes of my mother and niece that yearn to spend time with me. My siblings that I’ve missed watching grow up. My goal is to continue my journey setting an example for others. Instead of being an example by a system in New Jersey that has a proven track record for racial disparity amongst incarceration between blacks and whites. A juvenile shouldn’t be defined by a costly mistake with little to no opportunity to Redefine himself . Especially when his white co-defendants received their opportunity almost a decade ago. With self rehabilitation, self accountability taking, am I not worthy?
Adversity introduces a man unknown to himself. ~unknown~
Nasir continues to prevail. Using his time wisely. Not only has he written books. He has also took to Instagram to educate folks on these pressing issues and many more. Every dollar helps him get that much closer to the freedom he deserves. To not miss another moment away from his family. To lighten the burdens his mother carries. To help other youth of color like him receive justice. This fight is long overdue. We appreciate any support you are willing to give. If the film “when they see us” taught us anything at all. It’s that our black youth especially our males are conditioned and groomed to end up in the system. It’s time to break the cycle.
