270km for 270 lives

The oppression of black people is so deeply engrained in today’s society that many choose to enable it by ignoring it. The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013 with the murder of Trayvon Martin and BLM has been battling and highlighting racial inequality and racial violence ever since.

White violence on black bodies is nothing new. Ahmaud Arbery was murdered by police while jogging; Breonna Taylor was shot in her house; Jordan Davis was murdered by Michael David Dunn, unarmed.

Can you imagine feeling unsafe in your own community? Unsafe when you go jogging, unsafe going to the shops, unsafe when you’re in your own home, unsafe simply living your life?

In the last year, 270 black people have tragically died in or following police custody within the UK or USA.

There is no immediate fix for the deeply engrained racism that is embedded in our society, as it comes in so many forms and has such deep roots. White supremacy and racism in our laws and in our systems creates trauma for many black and people of colour throughout their lives. It is now time for white people to use their privilege to do better and everyone should do their best to dismantle all forms of racism, however it presents itself.

My four sisters and I would like to do all that we can to help the Black Lives Matter movement, to support all black people who are exhausted from the challenges of surviving in a society that actively oppresses their aspirations, dreams and on occasions their very existence.

In light of the above, we've set ourselves a challenge to each run 270km in 40 days with the aim of collectively raising £2700. The money will be equally split between the Stand Up to Racism and Black Lives Matter UK charities.

We will run for Ahmaud Arbery, who couldn’t. We will run for Trayvon Martin. We want to raise money to fight for justice on behalf of Belly Mujinga. We want to help to stop innocent people like George Floyd and countless others being killed, because Black Lives Matter.

Within these charities, the money will be used across a range of causes and projects, including campaigning for law change, developing educational resources, monitoring of police and supporting black communities impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
