This fund is intended to help my family of 5 who are giving care and support to my sister, Hanna Joy Besser, in Nashville, TN. Hanna was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 cancer on her 37th birthday at the end of August and is now in hospice care at home with a short-term prognosis.
She has no other family who live within 400 miles to care for her and so all of us are helping from out of town. Our family drove in from Houston, TX. The only other family present with her at this time is our mother and step-father from Charlotte, NC, who are living with her at her home to care for her daily needs. My wife and I have been appointed as her powers of attorney to be her advocates and take point on helping her with arranging important matters. It is also deeply meaningful to her to have our three daughters around as they represent the next generation of our family that she has been unable to have for herself.
We have been able to spend time with her over the past few weeks, but we have also been very busy managing this rapidly evolving situation. We have sought to bring order to what has been a chaotic and emotionally draining circumstance. Her friends and church have been kind and generous to help us with lodging expenses throughout the month of September. We do not know how much time we have left, but we are obligated and determined as her only immediate family to be with her to the end.
The funds we are seeking to raise will be primarily used to cover the extra lodging expenses for myself, my wife, and 3 daughters for the month of October. We have decided to rent a 2-bedroom furnished apartment through an agency that provides arrangements to displaced families such as ourselves. We will be using this as the base of our family support near my sister.
As the more urgent matters get addressed, I plan on resuming remote work to maintain our regular budget that pays for our food, clothing, and our house in Texas, among other things, and to preserve what remains of my paid leave balances. My place of work has been very accommodating to our situation, for which I am eternally grateful. Should the need arise for me to go on unpaid family leave, these funds raised would also supplement our emergency savings.
The duration for which we intend to help is entirely dependent on the course of my sister's disease condition. We are confident that we will have responsibilities in Nashville for the next few weeks at least, regardless.
We sincerely appreciate the love and support that we have received and do not take any of this for granted.
