Four years ago, we converted an unused, dilapidated house into a schoolhouse. The children showed up, so excited to be learning, playing, and eating together. Three years ago, we held our Grand Opening to The Little Mountain school in rural Joya Honda, Guatemala. Two years ago, we added an additional English teacher to meet our increased enrollment. And last year, we began to move forward with plans to build an entirely new school building for our growing population of faculty, staff, and students. Today, we continue educating our four grades as we prepare for the future. Even during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, we continue our students' English and Spanish education with virtual learning and by delivering learning packets and materials to their homes.
Although our in-school classes have been put on hold, GEO is still working to accomplish so much within the Joya Honda community:
1. We continue to distribute food to children who are malnourished or starving.
2. We continue to pay our teachers and staff a full salary. While classes may not be in session, teachers are prepping curriculum, helping to distribute food, and working towards a successful academic year.
3. We maintain our ultimate goal: to provide a quality bilingual education for the children of Joya Honda so that they may have more career opportunities and a higher quality of life in the future.
We want to reach as many children as possible and provide an exceptional bilingual education. English speakers in Guatemala can earn an income up to five times the typical daily pay rate, and those who wish to attend college will have the opportunity to continue their education. Please help us reach our goal so we may continue our work in Joya Honda.
We need to raise $25,000 in addition to what we currently have to cover our expenses for 2021. For the continued future success of The Little Mountain School, we also need $10,000 in pledges.
Thank you for your support, every dollar helps!
