For Paco, a friend to many paws

COZUMEL'S DOGWALKER NEEDS HELP (or: HELP FOR  COZUMEL'S DOGWALKER)

This is Paco. He lives in Cozumel, Mexico. For the last 10 years, after his musical career as a Reggae drummer, Paco found a need assisting a few friends with their animals, especially during the busy tourist season. Eventually, this grew into a fulltime business. Transporting animals to the vet, picking up the dogs for walks, housesitting and boarding, also. Paco is known to be seen all around the downtown and has become known as "Paco Perro". Tourists remember him from year-to-year when they vacation to Cozumel as cruise ship day trippers, divers or sport fishermen. Perhaps you have encountered him there. 

Then COVID 19 hit the world. For months there were no tourists, cruise ships or divers and fishermen. Cozumel is totally dependent on tourism to sustain its' residents. Many people have left the island to seek other employment and look for a means of survival. Mexico does not have a stimulus program, social services or unemployment. US citizens are much luckier than Mexicans.  

Paco's main concern is a safe vehicle to safely transport his own pets (Goyo, Yuyo, Cane, Dante & Matias), and to transport the animals he cares for to the vet and pet stores for their food. Over the last 10 years, Paco has walked and cared for over 100 dogs. As fate would have it, Paco's vehicle is not safe. COVID 19 prevented little resources to purchase another safer vehicle. He has resorted to walking some of his clients dogs as a 2 for 1. He does not want to abandon his "clients" as they really love their walking buddy.

Este es Paco. Vive en la Isla de Cozumel, México. Desde hace diez años, entre otros trabajos, Paco notó la necesidad entre sus amigos, de algo que muchas veces pasamos por alto: pasear a sus perros. De repente, se vio paseando, además de los suyos: Goyo, Eugene (Yuyo), Cane, Dante y Matias, a muchos otros peludos durante el día y de pronto eso se volvió un trabajo de tiempo completo. 

En los últimos diez años, Paco cuenta más de ciento cincuenta perros que ha paseado, transportados ida y vuelta en un vehículo seguro. 

Nunca se imaginó que podría ayudar a muchos amigos a dar largas y necesarias caminatas alrededor de la Isla. 

Después, Covid apareció en nuestras vidas. México no contó con ningún estimulo o ayuda económica como otros países sí tuvieron. Con el “Quédate en Casa”, los números de peludos disminuyeron dramáticamente y los que se deseaban continuar no podían afrontar el gasto. Paco empezó a pasear “becados” cuando los dueños solo podían pagar uno. 

Con ayuda de sus clientes, Paco recibe en su casa perritos en situación de calle, una vez que han recibido atención veterinaria, hasta que hallen un hogar (el ultimo por siete meses, cuando el “Quédate en Casa” empezó.) 

En estos momentos, su mayor preocupación es contar con un vehículo seguro para transportar a sus peludos. El que tiene ha requerido tantas reparaciones que se ha convertido en un obstáculo más para continuar trabajando.  

Vivimos tiempos inciertos, que dependen de la solidaridad de unos con otros, si tienes la dicha de tener un perrito o dos, sabes lo importante que es el servicio que Paco ofrece. Si te es posible echarle la mano, tanto Paco como sus peludos te lo agradecerán en el alma. Quizás algún día puedan agradecerlo en persona si visitas la Isla, donde puedes hallarlos caminando en el malecón o el Centro de Cozumel.
