An appeal for help

Hi, My name is Lissa Gray

For the past 7 years, as a group of private individuals, we have collected and donated much-needed school supplies for the underprivileged children in Aruba. The government of Aruba dictates it is mandatory for children aged 4 years and older to commence schooling. Ages 4—6 years at kindergarten and 6—12 years general education. There are over 80 schools in Aruba serving approx. 22.000 students.

The Aruban government funds the required basic school supplies but does NOT assist with items such as art supplies, educational games, etc.

I vacation annually on the island and became aware of the situation whereby there are children from homes who struggle financially and who often cannot afford some of the basic items required for their education. I set about gathering items throughout each year and bringing them to Aruba. In conjunction with Arubans who were aware of those in need, I received assistance in distributing the items to those schools that have needy children in attendance.

Over the years the quantity of donated items has increased. 3 years ago it was necessary to purchase oversized/overweight baggage from an airline to transport the donations. Last year, the quantity had again grown and it was necessary to ship by sea. The costs of shipping and the customs duty were paid by us, and some who contributed to a goFundme we had set up last year.

Last year 159 backpacks filled with writing pads, crayons, pens, markers, pencils, etc. were distributed to 3 schools. The appreciation on the faces of the children is indescribable.

This year we already have received over 200 more backpacks and some school supplies from the generous support of Tony Kirkpatrick and also Dr. Coffin - 7th Street Dental, Edmonton, Alberta. We will continue to gather more items to ship the items this July. We believe it is important for the children to have the tools to have a good and complete education, so they can contribute to their community later and have meaningful careers.

We are asking for help with covering the shipping and customs expenses. This goFundme has been set up for this purpose. In the past, we were able to cover these expenses as well as some purchases of items. The shipping estimates we have received are between $2000--$3500. Every donation, no matter how small will assist.
