2023 Nüümü Hu Huupi Hike, Indigenous Women Hike.

Manahuu Community—

In 2018, on the first Indigenous Women Hike/Nüümü Poyo hike, Autumn Harry and I fell a little short of our destination for that day—We ended up at s**** Lake. For people who don’t know s**** is a slur or derogatory term used for Native women. We found ourselves at this beautiful lake with a disparaging name. As Indigenous women it didn’t feel right, we talked about it, and decided then to symbolically rename the lake. We decided upon Nüümü Hu Huupi or Numu Magotne Lake meaning Paiute women. After the first hike we shared our story of traveling 190 miles of our ancestral lands and the racist and colonial names we encountered on the trail that erased Indigenous histories. We shared about symbolically changing some of these names on our journey as we picked up more of our hiking crew on the trail.

When the Department of Interior, headed by Deb Haaland, announced they would be changing derogatory place names across the Nation—IWH supporters took notice. One of our supporters, or possibly multiple, remembered our story of the symbolic name change we made on the Nüümü Poyo and submitted the Nüümü Hu Huupi name.

And….

The lake was officially renamed Nüümü Hu Huupi Lake!!!! One day I hope all the colonial names for mountains, passes, lakes and trails not only on my ancestral lands but all over Turtle Island will be changed to reflect the many Nations that have always called them home. So much heartfelt gratitude for IWH supporters who hear and uplift our story and history.

Now we prepare to journey back this summer to Nüümü Hu Huupi Lake to have a conversation with the land and the Lake about the change that took place. We will have an exchange of medicine with the land and with each other and return to our communities to bring that medicine home.

This gofundme will help support us in purchasing hiking boots, rain jackets, and any kind of personal gear needed for the women participating as well as any other items or support that is needed for the hike or preparation for the hike.

Manahobu for your support!

**We are keeping a close eye on the trail and will postpone this journey until 2024 should trail conditions prove unsafe.**
