Volunteering In Samoa

During the upcoming year, I am hoping to be able to travel to the South Pacific and volunteer as a rugby coach on the island nation of Samoa. Helping the charity organisation Projects Abroad, I would have the opportunity to help children develop their rugby skills, and encourage them to exercise and have fun. Samoa is a passionate rugby-playing nation. However, there is an abundance of children from disadvantaged communities that don’t have the opportunity to play. Access to coaching and equipment is limited. In addition, obesity is a growing problem in Samoa, especially within young communities. During my time in Samoa, I would work with Project Abroad's partner organisations and use rugby to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, the extent to my volunteering would not start and end with rugby. I would also teach English to local Samoan children to assist them in pursuing desired careers. This element would run along side me visiting local primary schools to coach rugby and promote physical exercise as well as teaching about nutrition as an assistant coach at a rugby clinic.
