A Safespace For Corey

Corey is a seven year old severely autistic boy. He is non verbal & shows little understanding of the world around him. Although normally a happy little boy, he has a very poor sense of danger and is yet doubly incontinent. He has a difficult time sleeping and struggles getting to sleep and staying asleep. He will often wake in the night and if he wasn’t safely enclosed in his current bed (which has cot type sides) he would wander in the night, putting himself, his family and the house in danger. However his current bed is no longer meeting his needs. He injures himself banging against the sides and has begun biting and eating the wooden sides. He has also tried to climb out of the small gap at the top of his bed and has on one occasion unscrewed the lightbulb in his room and tried to eat it. His constant bouncing in the night and hyperactivity means the bed is growing evermore unstable and unsafe. We have found a perfect Safespace bed which will meet Corey’s needs and keep him safe for years to come. The Safespace is exactly that; it is a space for Corey that is completely safe for him. It is biteproof, waterproof and very robust. He could not possibly injure himself in this space and being zipped from the outside means he cannot wander in the night. The Safespace also doubles as a sensory space, which Corey would love as he has extreme sensory disorders. We have met with the manufacturers of Safespaces and they have designed a Safespace which meets Corey’s needs 100%. It is at this point we (Corey’s parents) need to swallow our pride and ask for support in helping us raise the necessary funds for Corey’s Safespace, which will be around £8,500.
