11th Waterford Dungarvan Scouts Campsite

Who We Are:
Since 1968 scouting has played a role in the Dungarvan community with the establishment of the 11th Waterford Scout Group. Over the past 50+ years volunteer leaders and committee members have delivered on a scouting programme to multitudes of young people in the region, starting from age six with Beavers, through to Cubs, Scouts and finally Venturers up to the age of 18. Scouting encourages the social, physical, intellectual and emotional development of young people, and helps them in becoming responsible citizens, in appreciating and enhancing their community and giving them lifelong skills, all of which help them develop to their full potential.
Registered charity number 20206062.

Our Aim:
A significant part of scouting is getting involved in outdoor adventures and challenges, where the scouts forge strong friendships through teamwork, collaboration and fun. Scouts volunteer in their communities, learn adventure skills, travel to other scouting sites and learn a huge appreciation for their outdoor environment as part of their scouting life. Through their outdoor activities scouts are constantly working on skills like teamwork, contingency planning, project management, budgeting, first aid, cooking, navigation, building structures and making shelters. These learned skills can last a lifetime and underpin future careers and life-choices for our scouts, giving them excellent skills to take forward into their lives.

Our Project:
After over fifty years as a scouting group the 11th Waterford has just launched its most ambitious project yet, with the purchase of a 7.6 acre mature forestry site in Mount Stuart to be developed into a multi-purpose campsite. As well as a campsite, the site will feature zip lines, rope walks, an obstacle course, a dug-out trench for bridge building, and nature walks which will include a sensory garden area. The site will also have a hammock area, a backwoods training area, an outdoor cinema, a raised fire pit and seating area and an outdoor pizza oven and barbeque. The site will be a base for the Dungarvan scout group’s outdoor activities such as hiking, hill walking, navigation, mountain pursuits and cycling and their active water-based programme with activities like kayaking, rowing, sailing, swimming and more. All of these activities will be based from the Mount Stuart camp, with onsite facilities as well as easy access to mountains, hills, rivers and the sea to continue with further outdoor activities.

Who Will Benefit:
The site will be a base for the Dungarvan scout group’s outdoor activities, as well as being a national scout camp open to other scouting groups, girl guides, schools and community groups. The site will have the capacity and facilities to host regional and national scouting competitions, allowing scouts from all over Ireland to discover and experience our fantastic facility and natural amenities. The site will be a world-class facility for scouts to benefit from for generations.

Our Fundraiser:
Funds have already been raised for the site purchase. This has been achieved through a combination of bank funding and monies from previous fundraising. We are now looking to secure further funds to move forward with the site's development. Scouts and leaders have spent the past summer clearing the site and preparing it for the development works, and we are now at the stage where we need community investment to begin our proposed works to deliver our top class scouting facility. Donations received through this fundraiser will all go to direct development of the campsite.
