In March, I’ll be attempting to run a 10k in St Helens for two causes that mean absolutely everything to our family: Tourette’s Action St Helens and Parkdale United Under 10s. When I say “run”, please picture more of a slow shuffle, mild panic, and me wondering at what point this seemed like a good idea. I am very much not a runner, so this is going to be a challenge.

All jokes aside, I know exactly why I am doing this… our son George has Tourette’s syndrome, and like many families, this is something we live with every single day. Tourette’s affects far more than people realise, and some days are really tough. Tourette’s Action St Helens has been a lifeline for George and for us as a family – offering therapy, support, understanding, and reassurance when we need it most. Sadly, there’s a huge waiting list in St Helens, and so many children and families are still waiting for the help that has made such a difference to our lives.

Football is George’s happy place and one of the ways he copes. It gives him focus, confidence, and a break from the challenges Tourette’s can bring. Parkdale United Under 10s isn’t just a football team – it’s a family. The coaches are absolutely amazing, giving up their own time voluntarily and supporting every child as if they were their own. His teammates and coaches stand together as one, creating a safe, inclusive space where George feels accepted and confident. On the pitch, it’s just him – not Tourette’s – just a lad doing what he loves.

By taking on this 10k (likely involving walking, wheezing, dramatic sighing, and the odd internal meltdown), I want to give something back to the people and places that help our son feel understood, supported, and happy. Every donation, no matter how small, will help reduce waiting times, support more families, and keep these incredible, volunteer-led (football) services going.
