This isn't just a milestone — it's a story that started long before me.

My mother danced Folklorico growing up, and dance was always part of our extended family and household. I found my own voice through breakdancing, but the thread is the same: movement is how we carry our culture forward. As a dancer, DJ, artist, and business owner, I see every day how our cultural expressions define the soul of Humboldt Park/Logan Square and the world. We don't just live here, we move together, and we protect the arts that keep us whole.

In 2015, I crossed paths with Joe Luis Gonzalez, a legendary barber who had been serving this community since 1972, and William Hernandez, his trusted partner. They took me under their wing, mentored me, and Joe offered me the reins of the shop before I even finished barber school. This June 7th marks 10 years since I took over and opened Calaveras Barbershop & SMP. To honor this milestone, we're hosting our annual Block Party (noon–6 p.m. on the corner of W. Armitage Ave & N. Humboldt Blvd), and this year, we're doing more than celebrating. We're coming together to heal and progress.

We were all shaken by the recent attack on students of Ballet Folklorico de Chicago. But our community doesn't shrink in the face of hate; we show up louder, more vibrant, and more united. The best answer to that violence is a resounding celebration of everything they tried to silence.

That's why we are dedicating this year's block party and this fundraiser to Ballet Folklorico de Chicago and their mission to enrich cultural heritage, preserve traditions, and empower the next generation of artists through affordable programming, leadership, and scholarships. We're excited to have them perform at the block party!
