In 2026, Hull Deaf Centre celebrates the centenary of its home on Spring Bank - a building that has been at the heart of the Deaf community for 100 years.

To celebrate the Centre's centenary, on 26th September 2026, I'm taking on the biggest physical challenge I've ever attempted: cycling 100 miles and finishing at Hull Deaf Centre.

For a century, Hull Deaf Centre has provided support, opportunities and a welcoming place for Deaf people across Hull and East Yorkshire. As an independent charity, it relies on fundraising and the generosity of its supporters to continue making a difference.

For me, this challenge is also personal.

My dad has been part of the Hull Deaf Centre community for around 60 years. Throughout that time, he's not only used the Centre himself but has also dedicated countless hours as a volunteer in various capacities, helping to support the centre, improve its services and ensure it continues to thrive for future generations. Watching the time and commitment he's given over the years inspired me to find my own way of giving something back.

This isn't something I can do overnight. I'll be rebuilding my fitness before gradually training towards the challenge. Over the coming weeks I'll be completing everything from the early morning rides, the long training sessions, the inevitable setbacks and, hopefully ending at the moment I arrive at Hull Deaf Centre after completing 100 miles.

This ride is my way of recognising everything Hull Deaf Centre has meant to so many people over the last 100 years, while also saying thank you to a place that has played such an important role in my dad's life.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help Hull Deaf Centre continue supporting the Deaf community for the next 100 years.
