Emanuel Antonio Zayas is my friend who suffers from polyostotic fibrous dysplasia.

My name is Jaynie Estrada and I have been a missionary to Cuba since 2009. I met my husband in Cuba and my Cuban family has known Emanuel and his family since 2010. I am not related by blood but we are such close friends that we consider each other "family."
My Estrada family lives a few blocks away from the Zayas family in Santa Clara, Cuba and my mother-in-law and cousins attend the Church of the Open Door, which is pastored by Emanuel's father Noel Zayas and mother Melvis. I first personally met the family in 2014 while visiting my fiancee Delvys Estrada. We attended their tiny church and spent time with them in their home. I visited the family twice in 2015 and know them so well that I consider them to be my own family and after spending all last week together in Miami, Emanuel thinks of me as a "Second Mom!"
His parents and my husband say that two or three years ago, a small cyst-like lump appeared on his upper left cheek. It grew rapidly until it became a large benign tumor which we now know is called an ossifying fibroma. It has extremely distended his face and upper lip, which bleeds a lot. It also hinders Emanuel's ability to see, breathe and eat. The photo below shows his condition when I first met him in 2014. Since that time, I have worked hard to find a doctor in the US to help him.

Through the help and prayers of my church, Iglesia Edificadores and Pastor Hanoi Avila, I was introduced to Reel Life International, a mission organization in Birmingham, Alabama. Leaders at Reel Life met Emanuel and his family during a vision trip to Cuba in October 2017.
Pastor George Shamblin (a leader at Reel Life Int'l and The Center for Executive Leadership) was especially impacted by Emanuel and started to help us search for medical treatment. Pastor George shared Emanuel's story with Dr. Trey Rosenthal and through his colleague, we met Dr. Robert E. Marx DDS of the University of Miami Hospital.
Dr. Marx was at a medical conference in California and saw photos of Emanuel on a cell phone and said something like, "I know exactly what that is and I can help him."

Dr. Marx is a specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and has successfully removed this type of tumor several times before, most notably a teenage girl from Vietnam whose story was covered by the local news and ABC news.
Recently Dr. Marx removed an ossifying fibroma located in the same location from the face of another 14 year old boy. Both of these cases were a beautiful success so we are thrilled beyond measure that he will be performing Emanuel's surgery as well!

As soon as we met Dr. Marx, we were able to secure medical visas and immediately brought Emanuel and his parents to Texas. They spent Thanksgiving with us, the best holiday ever, and then I took them to Miami to start medical treatment on November 27, 2017.
Dr. Marx's recommended treatment is that the tumor be removed as soon as possible and his face be reconstructed through a series of surgeries.
Emanuel will undergo three surgeries and need additional medical treatment . The first surgery to remove the tumor and save his life is tentatively scheduled for January 12, 2018.
After a period of recovery, Dr. Marx will perform another surgery to rebuild his nose and repair his palate so he can breathe and eat normally again. There will likely be a third surgery to further reconstruct his face and medical treatment is expected to last 9 months.
Costs of the initial life-saving surgery are graciously being covered by Dr. Marx's foundation and the International Kids Foundation .
We need donations to cover Emanuel's reconstructive surgery, which will also be very expensive.

Sus padres y mi esposo dicen que hace dos o tres años apareció un pequeño bulto en forma de quiste en su mejilla izquierda superior. Creció rápidamente hasta que se convirtió en este gran tumor (benigno) que ahora conocemos como fibroma osificante.
